Nell Kellty (Jodie Foster) was discovered living alone in an isolated cottage in the Appalachian mountains of North Carolina by Dr. Jerome 'Jerry' Lovell (Liam Neeson). When Social Services receives notice of her case, they want to put her in a mental hospital and study her strange behavior. But a judge allows Dr. Paula Olsen (Natasha Richardson) and Dr. Lovell to study her in her own environment. Nell was raised by her mother and never allowed to encounter the outside world. She speaks her own strange language, which the doctors uncover, was developed by communication with a twin sister who died. The court only allowed for them to keep her isolated from society for three months so that they could learn to communicate with her and help her assimilate into society. The doctors wonder if they can help her in time.
