It is not always a simple life in Hell's Kitchen, one of New York's most notorious neighborhoods. Crime and corruption are flourishing and the Irish organized crime rules the area. When three young criminals are talking too loudly in a bar about their plan to murder Francis Sullivan (Edward Burns) that night, his younger brother Sean Sullivan (Elijah Wood) is determined to defend him. Sean kills all three, but his crime will have severe consequences. A hitman is sent after Sean, but by staging Sean's death Francis can eliminate the threat. Sean leaves the city and goes into hiding on a farm in Texas. After three years, Francis hears the rumor that Sean is back in Hell's Kitchen. Francis has turned his back on crime but because of family ties, he is still protected by the Irish gangster Whitey (Malachy McCourt). However, Whitey is not pleased to hear of Sean's return as he fears that Moran (Oliver Platt) will try to shift the power balance into his favor. Moran's brother and cousin were two of the criminals Sean had killed. Moran is still seeking his revenge for that night.
