An aging professor from Copenhagen wants to recapture the idealism of his youth as a Communist by defending a student radical leftist named Pil (Beate Bille) with whom he has an affair. Carsten (Jesper Christensen) throws away his family to defend a student who is accused of murdering a policeman. Nina (Pernilla August) is his wife who may not be so surprised by this. The professor is complicit in trying to save the radical girl by making bad choices in her legal defense, though the murdered man’s widow Lisbeth (Charlotte Fich) makes a compelling case against the radicals. Whether the professor’s choices are the silly mistakes of a midlife crisis, or whether life is so boring as to go in a new direction like this, seem to weigh on all concerned.
