When a high school prankster, Landon Carter (Shane West), ends up being punished for one of his pranks with mandatory attendance at several after school activities he meets Jamie Sullivan (Mandy Moore). The two of them come from different spheres within the high school social strata and he does not like her at first. When he is forced to become more involved with her in order to receive her help on a project he begins to like her, but at school continues to treat her disdainfully along with the rest of his school friends. Eventually her good nature wins him over though, and he begins to fall in love with her, which is the one thing that she insists that he must not do. When Jamie reveals to Landon that she is dying from terminal leukemia the two of them embark on a relationship that will change both of their lives and be "A Walk to Remember".
