In the midst of horrendous upheaval and genocide in Rwanda in 1994 one man strives to protect and save his family from the dangers of this threat, but in the end he protects hundreds of people, bringing them to safety. Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle) is the manager of the four star Hotel des Mille Collines and he and his family live a fairly comfortable life. However the world of the Rwanda that they live in is about to turn upside down with a genocidal clash between the Hutu and Tutsi, which are two different ethnic Rwandan groups. Only wanting to protect his family Rusesabagina gradually takes in more and more refugees of the violence at the Mille Collines. With a very minimal amount of help from a protective UN force headed by Colonel Oliver (Nick Nolte) who is himself interested in helping the people, he manages to protect and bring to safety several hundred people in the midst of all the violence.
