Jean de Florette is a movie that is set in France, and follows two families who are trying to make a living out of a land with limited water resources. The rich family is composed of an uncle Cesar Soubeyran (Yves Montand) and his nephew Ugolin (Daniel Auteuil). The nephew wishes to make a living growing carnations, and the uncle decides to help him by attempting to purchase land containing a very important spring for irrigation. When the old owner of the spring dies without selling, the uncle and nephew decide to block up the spring and hide its existence from the new owners, a family led by Jean de Florette (Gerard Depardieu), a hunchback who is also the son of the uncle’s old flame. The rich scoundrels hope that removing the water source will force the new family to fail, abandon their plans, sell the land to the schemers, and return to the city from whence they came.
