Wade Whitehouse(Nick Nolte) is a policeman in a small New England town whose obsession with a possible murder case eventually causes his life to unravel, as we find out from his brother Rolfe(Willem Dafoe), who tells the story in the present. Wade investigates an accident in which a man named Jack Hewitt(Jim True) comes back from a hunting trip saying the man hunting with him accidentally shot and killed himself. Everybody believes him except Wade, who is troubled by bloodstains on Jack's shoulder, so he is determined to investigate. This happens against the backdrop of Wade's disintegrating personal life, in which he tries to maintain a relationship with his daughter after his divorce from her mother and bickers with his current girlfriend. Wade also finds the investigation churns up memories of his mother's death and increased awareness of his bitterness towards his abusive father, whom he blamed for his mother's death.
