During the work week, Tony Manero (John Travolta) is a paint store clerk, has deadbeat friends, and lives with his family squabbling family. However, weekends find him king of the disco because of his fantastic dance moves. At the disco he is revered by admirers and pursued by ex-girlfriend, Annette (Donna Pescow). One night at the disco he meets Stephanie Mangano (Karen Lynn Gorney) and is instantly intrigued. Stephanie, however, snubs his advances. He doesn't fit into her dreams of success. Stephanie is interested in partnering with Tony in an upcoming disco competition, though, because she's knows he's the dancer most likely to win. Tony dumps Annette who was originally going to be his partner in favor of Stephanie. As they practice for the contest, Tony learns more about Stephanie and her ambitions. He begins thinking about his own life and lack of goals. He begins to aspire to something better. By the time Tony and Stephanie win the $500 disco prize, it isn't important to them any longer, because they both have bigger ideals to pursue.
