Betty Mahmoody (Sally Field) is an American woman married to Iranian doctor Sayed Mahmoody who they call Moody for short (Alfred Molina). Moody is an Iranian-born, U. S. educated anesthesiologist who desperately misses his family in Iran. He convinces Betty into taking a trip to Tehran to for two weeks with their daughter Mahtob (Sheila Rosenthal). Once in Iran, Moody’s conservative family disapproves of his western ways and Moody becomes increasingly violent towards his wife. He reveals to Betty that he lost his job in the states and wants the family to stay in Iran where they are in need of doctors. Betty is beaten and forced to stay in Iran for over a year when she decides to try to escape back to the America. Under Iranian law she is not allowed to leave without her husband’s consent and wouldn’t be able to take her daughter if they were to divorce. Betty tries to find someone to trust and aid her in smuggling her daughter back home with her while all of Moody’s family and friends are against her and willing to turn her in if she runs.
