Joe Darrow (Kevin Costner) and his wife Emily (Susanna Thompson), are both doctors in Chicago. Emily is nearly nine months pregnant with their baby when she decides that she must go to South America to help out the locals with medical needs. Joe does not want her to go because she may deliver the baby at any time, and unfortunately for both of them his fears are well founded as Emily's bus is washed away in a landslide. As Joe tries to move on he doesn't do much to grieve his wife, just diving in to work and trying to forget. When strange things start occurring and he starts seeing dragonflies, which Emily loved, everywhere, he begins to wonder if she is not trying to communicate with him. Eventually he ends up returning to the scene of her death to try and piece together the puzzle of the communication that he feels he is receiving from her. Will he solve the mystery of the 'Dragonfly'?
